Solved Why the System can't creat a memory dump file in win Xp?....

Toshiba / Satellite a100
May 18, 2016 at 03:52:57
Specs: Windows XP, x86 1995 MHz
Although I enabled memory dump in case of a crash and I made sure that the pagefile is 3GB, the memory dump in case of a crash is still not written to the memory.dmp file. when I set the page file to 3GB I got an error message saying:If the pagefile on c: is less than 200MB the system cant create a debugging info file, continue? The actual size of the pagefile is 3GB but for some reason cant be read by the system as such size? How to trouble shoot?

Hi again Gentleman.

Better off using > Small memory dump
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...

Startup and Recovery Settings
http://www.home-pc-help.com/startup...
If the folders are empty > Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Then select Advanced system settings Tab on the left menu.
Under the Startup and Recovery section, click on Settings.
Make sure "Write an event to the system log" is checked and "Automatically Restart" is unchecked. In the drop down menu under "Write Debugging Information," select Small memory dump (64KB,128kb or 256KB) press OK and OK again.

Why are you setting limits on the page file? Just check the box for "automatically manage paging file size" & let Windows handle it.

When I tried to let windows decide, I got a message saying: if the pagefile size is less than 200MB the system may not write a debug info. So that didnt work.

Actually today I got a crash, and no info is written in the dump file (or the file is corrupt) so we are back to square 1.

Let me have a look at these logs.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
If we have to run Farbar more than once, refer this SS.
http://i.imgur.com/yUxNw0j.gif
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the Desktop.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt)
The logs are large, upload them using Zippy ( No account/registration needed ) or upload to a site of your choosing. Give us the links please.

When I looked for the file minidump.dmp in c:\ I didnt find it although I disabled hiding system files.
Also, the program whocrashed.exe has a feature of causing a test crash. After that test there was still no dump file in system root. The blue screen itself indicated "memory dump is complete"This is the mystery I am trying to understand. I will provide a photo when a real crash happens, I dont know when though.

"whocrashed.exe has a feature of causing a test crash"
Now it makes sense, I will throw an XP drive onto my comp & test.

I will probably get the same result as you.

Shall do that tomorrow.

Update:
the dump files are found in the Minidump directory under windows, however, whocrashed reports that those files could not be read because they may be corrupted!.

Have you run whocrashed.exe test crash, since you altered the paging file on D & E?

Yes I ran the test crash after removing paging files from D and E. The file is still unreadable to whocrashed. I am thinking of relocating the dump directory to D:\ to see what happens.

No this didnt make any difference. Whocrashed found the dump file on D but reported it was corrupt and unreadable. Something is stopping the system from making a valid dump file. This is the link for a message came from Winpatrol. does it have anything to do with it?

I will run this sometime tomorrow. Can you confirm if this repair wont make me lose any settings or drivers? The original windows repair that comes with the CD makes me loose some drivers and settings!!

Also, can you suggest a program that can check the hard drive and memory for defects?

"Can you confirm if this repair wont make me lose any settings or drivers?"
I have never had it happen, but when we are fixing comps, anything can happen.

"can you suggest a program that can check the hard drive"
That is done during the running of Tweaking.com.

"memory for defects?"
Will get back to that, we need to run Tweaking.com first.
