Hi,
Sometimes I click on a picture on a web site, and when I look in the address field of my web browser, I can see that the filename of the picture is a gif or jpeg. But when I right click on the picture and choose "Save picture As"...the picture is a bmp file!

if you click on "save as type" you should be able to select "jpeg" and save as normal.

Craig, The usual solution to that problem is to delete your Temporary Internet Files. More info at the link below and it's a common problem.

Internet Explorer does not save graphics files in the proper format

Hi,
Try the below mentioned steps.
PLS BACKUP UR REGISTRY BEFORE YOU TRY THESE STEPS:
===========================================
Open the registry editor and go to the following key
>>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-SOFTWARE-MICROSOFT-SHARED TOOLS-GRAPHICS FILTERS-EXPORT-JPEG
>>Right click on the EXTENSIONS value and choose modify. change the VALUE DATA to JPG
>>This value may already have a value of "jpg, jpeg" - this will not work and must be changed
>>Click the OK button. Close the registry editor.
>>Restart the computer

It should resolve your problem
