why does my internet stop working?

i am connected on a wireless network to a router in the adjacent room. i find that after i leave my computer on for a while, the internet stops working, but the strange thing is if a program was currently running, such as kazaa or AIM, they would still work but if i started a new program such as AOL or Internet Explorer, they would not work. anyone have any suggestions?

That's a good one and I don't really have a straight answer for you. Only thing that I can think at this early hour is possibly something to do with the power management settings on your laptop. Try setting your HDD to always on.

well im on a desktop, but i already have my HDD set to always on. i was thinking that too, im perplexed as well.

my wireless router disconnects me every time it renews the ip address. Customer service seems to think that nothing is wrong with that.
Programs that were running will reconnect after a while...but if i try to start a program while the router is doing its thing, the application kind of hangs....
i'm guessing it has something to do with your router...perhaps the firewall. When my router renews the ip address, the firewall starts denying all connections, even the ones that were previously active
