Specs: Windows XP
Periodically there is a background noise on my computer, it has followed me from computer to computer. The noise sounds like someone is slamming a door closed.

Yes I am serious. It has followed me for the lst 3 to 4 computers so I am guessing it must have been on the first one and came over when I transferred programs. No pattern, have tried registry programs in past, nothing has worked. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks metroman

Could be so many things.....stuck cd door, hard drive head resetting, windows themes..& sound settings.....take it to a tech and hope it misbehaves for them. When I empty the trash mine yells "oh the humanity of it all" from the hindenburg....could be many things. Good Luck

Have you any idea where the sound is coming from, ie the speakers or the computer itself?

You could type msconfig in Run box and disable old programs in Startup to see if you can find the culprit.

Could be something weird like one of those piston controlled pop up chairs that moves up and down sometimes.

sounds like the poster is using MS word and he shuts it off and the little helpers close the door.
Or they could be in a chatroom where people leave and a sound is made.

Just sounds pretty fishy to me, sorry

"Nah, fish don't make a noise like doors slamming."
You never know...if they broadside a cement wall or huge rock, that could make that sound ;-)

Hmmm.

Clue could be in the name "metroman" - If he's from Paris maybe it's sliding doors.

It's from one of your messenging or chat programs. I forget which one but ICQ or possibly MSN messenger would make a door slamming shut sound when someone left the room. Check your messenging and chat programs.

I always thought that MSN had something of the devil about it. Definitely need a exorcist.

I think XpUser4Real has the answer. I knew it was one of the chat or messaging clients, I just couldn't remember which one.
