Why is it that whenever I do a system recovery, uninstall programs, or halt all processes that I don't currently need, my computer's performance always degrades over time. For instance, my computer is now so slow that I can double-click on My Computer, go to the kitchen and get a drink, come back, and Explorer will still not have fully opened. I try to keep it clean the best I can. I canstantly use the latest virus and spyware removers, occasionally defrag my hard drive, and try to keep currently installed and running programs to a minimum. What causes such slow performance and how can I fix this problem?

Try running CHKDSK /R from the recovery console. Note space between K and /.

Are you joking? You're running Windows Xp Professional with 64MB of RAM, and you want to know why the computer runs slow!?!

Windows 95 would run just fine on that machine...

Start-help- and type in recovery console. It will tell you how to install it. Then run it from the boot menu.

Also-bobthearch is correct. XP needs at least 128 mb of memory and optimum is 512 mb. Good luck.

There may be some hint on the computer case as to it's age and power, for instance a "Pentium II" sticker. You can also (probably) find the original specs for the computer by doing a Google search for the computer model name.

In Windows XP you can find some statistics from Start / Settings / Control Panel / Performance and Maintainence / System. That will tell you the processor type and speed, and how much RAM is installed.

I'm guessing that because it's a second-hand computer, it may be more suitable for an older Windows version such as 95 or 98se.

Best Wishes,
Bob

This problem started happening to my 1ghz Dell with 192 megs of ram a couple of days ago. I have reinstalled XP about 4 times, reformted my C: drive about 4 times. Upgraded to SP2 twice. CHKDSK , Scandisk all have been ran to no avail. I installed Windows ME and "my computer" and IE fuctioned normally. When I uprgraded again to Windows XP the same problems occured again. I get the searching icon when I try to open my computer and IE won't search for a web site unless I type http:// before the web address. Before I could just type CNN.com etc. and the browser would go.

Hi Joe. This thread is so old I suggest you make a new post with the problem. In the meantime you can try this.--How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. You MUST install at least SP1 and all the updates for security reasons. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 cd you will have to d/l sp1 and all subsequent updates. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. If you don't want SP2 go to autopatcher.com and d/l SP1 and subsequent updates.

Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks. It would be a courtesy if you would post back and let us know if the fix worked or not.

I did a system repair, but that didn't solve the problem.
