Why does deleting files in XP take too long?

Specs: Windows XP
When I delete any file, files, folder, folders
or even any empty folder. It takes too long
and after 3 or 4 min it asks me do you
really want to delete when I press yes
again it take 3 or 4 minuts. although file,
files, folder or folders are not much size
and also even an empty folder or file takes
too much time.

muryali, deletion shouldn't take that long. The fact that it does makes me think you need to 'clean up' your machine. History, temp files, index data, etc. If they're bloated, operations can get really slow.

Make sure the Recycle Bin is empty.

Yes recycle bin is empty but it also take too much time to
empty recycle bin as well.

If you are not networking.

Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings:
Uncheck the very first box that reads "Automatically search for network folders and printers".
