your exe. file associations are probably corrupted. This link has a solution. If you can get your exe's working download malwarebytes and run a scan, something has corrupted the exe's.

First, no need to shout. Second, what is the name of the file with extension that you are trying to open?

If you have "hide known file extensions", turned on then turn them off so you can see the extension.

http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Hidd...

If you had it already turned off and you renamed a file without including the extension then you will cause this kind of problem. If that is what happened then what is the program that normally opened the file like MS Word or what? If it was MS word then add the ".DOC" extension to the file and it will fix your open with problem. If it is MS Excel the add ".XLS" extension to the file and so on. Tell us more about the file you are trying to open and we can help you.

The short-cut either lost its .LNK extension or it got pointed to another file. Either way you can fix it by creating a new short-cut.

Click Start
Select All Programs
Scroll down to Outlook Express
Right Click it
Select Send To
Select Desktop
Delete the broken Short-cut

jrcook, other posters have suggested a variety of things to try. My 2ยข worth, take a look at 'what open what' @:
http://filext.com/
that'll tell you what to 'open with'. Change the association and check the 'always use' box so it won't happen again.

In my case, this issue with the persistent "Open With" box popping up was caused by a virus called GFL.exe. There are other similar viruses which cause the same problem, namely the inability to access a browser and various other websites, including the inability to run regedit. ( I am currently using Vista).

My solution was to open the Windows Task Manager, and from the Applications tab, click File, then click New Task Run...then in the Open: box type in your favourite anti-virus program, enter and run it. The "Open With" pop-up box did not appear this time.

I typed in Malwarebytes.org, a FREE anti-virus/anti-spyware program that requires no registration. I ran the quick scan feature and it found the GFL.exe virus and allowed me to delete it. Once this was done, I restarted the computer and everything was back to normal.

Hope this works for you.

It will create a file XP_EXE_FIX.REG
Run this file and it will fix your problem.
