Comment:

I recently added some memory to my husbands desktop and now everytime I boot up the computer I have to hit the F4 screen. It looks exactly like this:

Intel Corporation D865GBF Desktop Board
Serial Number ABBF45112982
BF86510A.86A.0077.P25.0508040031

Intel (R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40Gz
DDR226 --> Operating in single-channel dynamic paging mode.

512MB System RAM

Legacy Keyboard .... Detected
USB Legacy ........ Enabled

Fixed Disk 0: 3M-Maxtor 5T040H4
Ultra DMA Mode ATA/100
ATAPI CD-ROM 4M-AOPEN DUW1608/APR

Press <F4> to Resume

Can anyone tell me what could be wrong?

Thanks,

Deidre

If you installed the correct TYPE of RAM,
then see if it helps if you enter BIOS,
then do "save settings and exit".

Well the memory that you have added may be differing from the previous one. Chuck 2 guided the right way. Do it and revert back..

maybe your BIOS has 'defaulted'

found this:

"The problem with F4 to resume, is an issue with the hard settings in the BIOS, you have to set the hard drive settings to user instead of auto, then set the UDMA at 5 and SMART at disable after you save the new settings, boot the system no more message of F4 to resume."

imho setting S.M.A.R.T. to disabled should do.

why would you disable smart? imho that is dumb to not get a message of impending hard drive failure.
That is like killing the oil light in your car. Little late after the engine has frozen and has to be replaced.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

I agree with the Oracle. IMO SMART is of little practical use. It's probably more likely to tell you that your hard drive is dying when it isn't, then warn you of a real problem.

Might want to update your information on smart. Saved my data once and the drive did eventually fail. That's all it takes to convince me. Even at 40% reported possible failure is a better heads up then starting your computer to a dead hard drive.
