Hey guys. Happy New Year! Hope you all had a good time over the holidays.
Well, I received this new HP computer for christmas. Everything is fine with it, except there's this whistling sound coming from the computer tower. It isn't constant...usually you'll hear it for about 5 seconds, then after 10 seconds, you'll hear it again. It is also more frequent when the hard drive is loading something or is working in some way.
My brother says it's just the CPU fan working, but I'm not sure how credible that is.
Again, this is a brand new PC, just over a week old.
I plan on opening up the computer tomorrow when I put more RAM in...does anybody have any suggestions of what I should look at while I have the PC open, or what I can do to silence this a bit?
I also have the tower up on my desk this time to save it from the dust. My other PC I had was on the floor...so maybe I'm just better able to hear what goes on in the PC.
Suggestions, anyone? :P
Thanks,
Chris

I agree with your brother it probably is just the fan or the CD-Rom drive running. Some of them are noisy. I have a Gateway it is noisy. I do not know what you can do to make it quieter unless you replace the fan with a quieter one.

Yes, this is true. I have a Dell which has a noisy fan, then i replaced it last week with the same size fan but it ws guaranteed to be quieter. This fan fixed the noise problem. Go to http://www.tigerdirect.com
Thank you for your help.
