I would go with Vista. Eventually, more and more apps will need DirectX10 and Vista will become the standard to have. I see no reason to wait. I made the move about 4 months ago and I'm glad I did.

I will stick with the Rolls Royce of systems xp.

I dont need directx 10 folks, gamer's might.
It all depends on your needs and if you can afford to up-grade your pc not just the software.

For the modern day PC, XP.

Vista is too unstable, imcompatible, and plainly un-useable. Maybe in 2 or 3 years it might mature enough, and by then you'll be buying a new PC again anyways, if not your 2nd new PC.

So stick with XP for now. Try getting ahold of XP SP3. It has tons of bug fixes from SP2 and lots of other tweaks. I like it alot.

I'd be with XP - regardless of any possible/remaining quirks/issues etc. it may have. Vista is still a relatively new and less well travelled OS; and whilst it will doubtless grow in reliability anon... why embark of field trials of it for M$ at your expense?

Why would you wanna install SP3? It hasn't even been released yet. The version that's been making the rounds is a "leak". M$ isn't gonna officially release SP3 for XP until early 2008. Same goes for SP1 for Vista.

Ubuntu is no less stable than Vista, and a lot cheaper.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

"Vista is too unstable, imcompatible, and plainly un-useable. Maybe in 2 or 3 years it might mature enough,...."

The above is totally outlandish -- pun unintended -- but it is yet again not surprising in the least. Being opinionated is one thing, consistently dishing out unsubstantiated & flat-out misleading tidbits is another.

good for you sabertooth!

I don't especially care for Vista myself but there isn't anything actually bad about the operating system itself...the problem lies in the difference that it was made for everyday run of the mill people that don't know much about computers so it is jam packed full of (to me and others in this forum) unneccessary security questions. To us it just is too much over kill along with the high memory usage because of the overbuild of GUI and pretty pictures of window pages. Strip that away and it is not a bad operating system.

I remember the same issues coming out when converting from versions of Wx to NT and W2000 along with XP

Would go with XP, Vista is nice and all, but you have to be prepared for not so pleasant surprise every now and then.
