Specs: Windows XP
I tried to locate where winxp puts its temporary files during downloading a song for example and before it moves it to the requested directory, winxp does use the temp directory or the temporary internet files directory it seem that it puts the downloaded files in the fly

Various places, depending what you're doing.

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp (where username is your logon name). This folder is hidden.

are the 2 most common.

just do a search for file using the *.* and date of dload in date option.
and look in result for your file type. also size of file else.

but some times, the folder well be deleted after the task is done. here you can pause the task (if is possible) to do your search.

plan B, if you have (or can get) an explorer that can show you the size of folder in the tree view , it can give you an idea on the folder (or the parent) by looking just for its size changing; and you access this folder (or subfolder) and looking for the new file (date of creation) . . .

I am Sure xp deletes the folder after downloaded
about the size in the status bar it is not of much help because it shows in MegaBite
which is not sufficient if the file file is not big enough

during downloads?

Depends on what's doing the downloading - different browsers have different locations (IE usually in temporary Internet files folder in local settings in your profile, Google chrome to downloads folder in my documents - can be changed, Firefox - customisable). XP doesn't actually do any downloading. Outlook & Outlook express use other temp folders in your profile. What are you trying to achieve?
