Hi folks,
Where can I find the files saved on Desktop if the OS fail to boot? I can boot the PC with LiveCD and mount the HD. I can recover files saved on "My Document" folder. Which folder holds the documents on Desktop. TIA

Shouldn't you be working on resolving the boot issue as opposed to diving head first at a Live CD recovery procedure? or was that unsuccessful?

Hi jam,
Tks for your advice. I can't find it.
The story is as follow;
My niece, a girl of 12, sent me her PC running WinXP for rescue. She has all her school homework on the PC without spare copies. The PC came without any CD nor instruction/manual. WinXP can't start hanging on desktop with background picture displayed. However I can start it on Safe Mode.
Her WinXP box is in complete mess. I found she installing dozens of software with their starting icons linked on desktop. She saved her homework all on desktop, having .doc, htm, txt, pdf, etc. format. She even saved her homework created with PhotoImpact on desktop. I searched the Program folder of PhotoImpact and can't find them.
Now I try to run LiveCD to save her homework first before reinstall OR restore WinXP to factory config. I found the restore image is on Partition-C. On booting it prompts 3 options;
- boot WinXP
- boot rescue mode
- setupI think the last option "setup" refer to "restore". If I failed to locate the desktop folder I'll run LiveCD to copy "Documents & Settings" to an USB enclosure. After restore I'll copy it back to Partition-D. This, I hope, can preserve her homework.
Is there any method to make WinXP boot first? Now it can't boot finally only hanging on desktop screen. I can boot save-mode. Maybe deleting some software with links on desktop can make WinXP revive. In doing so I don't know whether her homework will be erased simultaneously.

Hi Sabertooth,
Tks for your advice.
I can't make WinXP to boot except save-mode. Please see my reply to jam above. Tks.
Is there any way to make WinXP booted first in stead of booting to save-mode removing some software? TIA
B.R.
