Comment: I want to try to find the file in Windows XP SP3 that holds the OS version. I would like to try and change the OS version that you see in dxdiag to Windows Vista. Thanks, if you know.

Reply: (edit)If you're running XP, you can't just try and arbitrarily "change" the OS. Just out of curiosity, why do you want to do this? "So won’t you give this man his wings What a shame To have to beg you to see We’re not all the same What a shame" - Shinedown

Reply: (edit)So you want to fool something into thinking it is running on Vista instead of XP. What a brilliant way to kill a system stone dead. The information is not stored in a file it is stored in the registry here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion Change this and applications will think they are running on Vista when in fact it is still Windows XP.
