Thanks for that. It appears that windows messenger has superceded Netmeeting. Do you know if Netmeeting can do anything that messenger cannot.

According to Windows Messenger FAQ:

Question: Can users on Windows Messenger and NetMeeting communicate with each other?

Answer: No. NetMeeting users will continue to use NetMeeting. But we believe that the superior features and quality in Windows Messenger will convince most users to start using Windows Messenger.

Question: RTC and app sharing have always been available via NetMeeting. Why do I need Windows XP?

Answer: Windows Messenger in Windows XP provides a much better communications and collaboration experience than NetMeeting for three key reasons:

* It’s easier to use and more complete. With Windows Messenger, you no longer need to find your contact's IP address or look for them in a chat room-like directory in order to connect with one another. Windows Messenger is based on presence—the ability to stay updated with your contacts online status—so you know when they are logged on and if they are available to work or communicate with you. This makes Windows Messenger much easier, enhances people’s communications’ capabilities therefore making them more efficient and productive.

* It provides a better quality experience. Windows Messenger takes advantage of a number of voice and video quality improvements that are specific to Windows XP. Improvements such as phone call-quality voice, acoustic echo cancellation, and more have been made in Windows XP and Windows Messenger.

* It provides an extensible platform. Windows Messenger is based on a new set of IETF industry standards that enables interoperability with other software vendor products and equipment manufacturer’s infrastructure. Furthermore, Windows XP includes Real-Time Communications application programming interfaces (APIs) that let software vendors extend the benefits of real-time communications support to a wide range of applications and services. This is already creating some great new innovative, affordable services for customers, such as the new PC-to-phone call support that allows you to make voice calls from your PC to someone who is using a telephone, with the call enabled via a service provider you select.

Of course, Windows XP includes Windows NetMeeting so if your organization has made investments in H.323 standards-based gear that works with Windows NetMeeting, then you can certainly continue to use NetMeeting. Because Windows Messenger is easier to use, delivers clearly superior sound quality, and can enable a whole new generation of innovative products and services, real-time communications via the PC is becoming much more an everyday experience for millions more people and is creating significant new opportunity for the industry.
