Subject: Where are CAB files in XP? OS: XP, SP1 CPU/Ram: P4, 2.53Ghz, 512Ram

Comment: Several times on my old PC in W98 I had to restore a DLL file. The originals were easily extracted from the CAB files in Windows/Options/Cabs. The search feature made it easy to locate which CAB file your DLL was located in. I've been searching my new PC for these CAB files, and don't seem to see an "Options" folder or a "CAB" folder. Where in XP are these original DLL system files stored? Also, if ever the need to restore one arises, is there a utility like System File Checker to easily extract & replace the file? Thanks, Lisa

Reply: (edit)I have never seen the CAB files on XP. System file checker can be used; you just have to insert your XP CD into the drive and SFC will grab the files from there. George

Reply: (edit)Thanks, George. I don't have an XP CD. I have a HP Desktop System, which came preloaded. You don't even get recovery CD's, I had to burn them myself! The files have to be somewhere on this hard drive, however, they're not in the same location as in W98. Maybe someone with a preloaded XP system knows where to find these? Lisa

Reply: (edit)You can try looking in the /Windows/I386 directory. All the files that end in _ are unexpanded. You can use the expand command when you need to expand one of them. -=Bryan=-

Reply: (edit)Have you went to folder options in the control panel and click on the view tab at the top and scrolled down and unchecked hide protected operating system files?
