It seems as if you're not setting the jumpers correctly on the HDD, either that, or you don't have it connected to the IDE cable properly.

Open your case and verify all the cables are connected and there is power to all drives.

Download the manual for your system from here: http://support.dell.com/support/edo...

It would help if you stated what drive you have and how you're connecting it (physically.)

I finally found another ribbon I have the hard drive directly connected by itself to the motherboard with the jumper on the first pin. The cdrom is plugged up into the ide part of the motherboard and the jumper is on the first set of pins. It is now recognising the hard drive in the bios as the primary master drive. But it saids that the primary slave drive is off. It shows the secondary master drive as the cdrom drive. Is this correct? 0r does the cdrom have to be a primary slave drive and if so where do i put the jumper on it at? Thanks for your help. When i try to install windows It goes but stops at when its examining the hard disk and then it tells me there are no harddrives connected. Please help. Thanks

you need to tell us the model number of your harddrive so that we can tell exactly what needs to be done!
