When I try to get online my computer freezes

Specs: Windows XP
I have a dell laptop which I have had for two years with not one problem until lately. I was trying to watch a video and it said my codec was out dated or something and I went to update it and my computer froze. I restarted it and it had a problem with one of the discs so it checked them and froze in the middle of that, I restarted it multiple times sometimes it said it had to repair something or check the discs and I wasn't even able to go into safe mode with it. Now this morning I was able to enter into safe mode and run my avg virus scan to make sure it wasn't a virus. I wasn't really sure what else to do, so I exited out of safe mode and tried to get online and it froze, I also tried to switch my preferences on yahoo and msn messenger to have them not start up when I restart my computer but it froze when I tried to do that to, but if I'm not doing anything on it it's fine. Is there any way to fix this?

Start up in safemode
Leftclick My Computer.
Richtclick your C drive (if that is your main system drive) and select Properties > Tools
Check disk for errors. Tick both boxes and when it says it can only do the job by restarting windows click OK.

Let the disk check complete when it restarts.

If that does not resolve the issue then try System Restore in safemode to a date prior to the CODEC update.
