I HAVE A PLANAR MONITOR. IT HAS SURVIVED 2 COMPUTERS AND WAS WORKING FINE, UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN I WENT TO AWAKEN IT AND IT FLASHED ON THEN OFF. I HAD TO KEEP TURNING IT OFF AND ON UNTIL IT FINALLY STAYED ON. I'M ONLY ASSUMING THAT IT IS MY MONITOR.

Yes, the monitor is faulty, probably the power button or the contacts behind it. I,m not a TV or monitor expert but it may be fixable if you know someone who mends them.
It is most likely the good ole' monitor as Phil and you suspect, but it could be a failed video card/on board controller, if a new monitor does not solve the problem.
Make sure the connections are tight too, just in case. Probably not the issue, but often overlooked in the diagnostics. :: mike
