Asus or IBM. Get a decent one though... you get what you pay for. DON'T BUY ACER OR COMPAQ!!!

I don't know who Thorpe is (???) but it depends how much money you want to spend. The lower priced ones don't usually have enough RAM to run XP properly, and the warranties are 1 year or less. If I were going toget one that I intended to keep it would be a ThinkPad or one of the Dell Latitudes (not an Inspiron)

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

I've had a Compaq Presario for 3 years now and it's used daily for the business. Don't know how things have hanged since joining up with HP but their support line is very good. Thinkpads (IBM) have had some hardware problems recently on one of their ranges but I suppose all manufacturers go through sticky stages. Dell certainly produce well-featured laptops but I've had bad experiences with their support. Surprisingly the nicest laptop I've come across recently, which I needed to contact their support about & was quite pleased with the response, was Medion - but they seem to use slightly unusual sources or hardware so unless you're looking for lots of features for little money I'd give them a miss. Finally, don't ignore Asus - they are getting very good reviews for decent, well-specced laptops.

This is just my experience but I would disagree with Impavidus on the comment on Acer and Compaq.

1) Acer are not a tough as an IBM on build quality but I have used both the Travelmate and Aspire series and if you don't chuck them against a brick wall everyday they are great value for money
2) My nextdoor neighbour has a 15 year old who has had a compaq laptop for 2+ years and that thing gets some real hammer!!! Still going strong!

I agree though you get what you pay for.

Turn it off, wait a while, turn it back on again.
