What's the best HDD diagnostic?

What's the best freeware/demoware diagnostic program to detect a potentially bad hard drive? I've run the full-blown version of chkdsk and the hdd self test in my BIOS, but have no conclusive results. Western Digital's Data Lifeguard won't work in its bootable version, because I apparently don't have a WD drive.
It will work with any IDE HDD and ignore the fact that this is from Gateway, I use it all the time. Just download the very first file listed.

The best diagnostic, is the diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer. Find out who manufactured your hard drive (the bios screen at bootup may show it, device manager may show it, or open the case and look on the drive), go to their website and download their diagnostics tool. Also, if the hard drive is still in warranty, the manufacturers require you to run their diagnostics anyway, before they will authorize an RMA.

Forgot to mention, laptop with no floppy, so the above GW program doesn't work. Maybe if I write it to a CD-R?
I appreciate the input above. It's a Toshiba drive. I've been all over their support site and can't find anything about drive diagnostics.
