OK ..This is weird..I was lookin thru the event viewer in admin svcs. Found some errors logged, most dont concern me...mostly my errors but ...
When something is trying to write to something???
System error
date: several x a day I havnt seen anything really weird goin on so i dont know when to check.
source: acpi
time: different times
category: none
type: error
event id:5
user: n/a
computer: name of my computer
AMLI:ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0x70), which lies in the 0x70-0x71 protected port range.
This could lead to system instability.
Please contact system vendor for assistance.

This error occurs again few seconds later with the event id:4 ....everything bout the error is the same as event id:5
This is a hand-me-down puter therefore no paperwork came with it. trying to search google with that error????...LOL..
checked for trojans, viruses, spyware, hijackers, all that good stuff and i'm clean as a whistle.
I also dont see any virus checker in bios let alone wether or not it is running or not.
Bios is compaq eb/sb series date:12/09/98.
If ya need more info I can probably pull it up, just let me know.
Oh ya...drivers are up to date and i have no device conflicts.
Thanks

sounds like to me the 400 mhz cpu is struggling a little to run xp.
but, try changing out memory first. its usually the culprit

I just got new memory not too long ago...
biggest moduele i can put in is 128 meg. I only have 2 slots. So that leaves me a max of 256.
The highest I can overclock my cpu is to 500mhz.
Like i said i dont know what this writing to stuff is...why is BIOS trying to write to the port i said above?
And I dont know how long this has been going on since i have had no real reason to check the error logs other than being curious if that makes sense...lol
I dont have too many apps runnin at a time either..msn,mcafee av, zone alarm, belkin shutdown software (for ups), and surfin.
dosn't seem to lag much.
When I'm doing stuff offline I shut down most of the running apps. (msn,za,av)
The ram is pc/100 sdram (168pin)
