What telephony providers to remove?

I have seen elsewhere a tweak saying to remove all unnecessary telephony providers listed on the Advanced tab of Phone & Modem Options in Control Panel. I have 5 providers listed (and could add 2 more) in my stand-alone unit with dial-up IC and FAX enabled. Does anyone know a good place to find out what these various providers do? (MS wasn't particularly helpful.) TIA.
