Anybody know what wmipvs.exe is? I tried to Google it but the only hit I got was from a unix site.
It is showing up as an "Unknown Publisher, Do you want to run this file?" msg on my daughter's account, but not on mine on the same system. The last thing I installed on that system is the Verizon Wireless V-cast Music Manager, but I don't know if this problem occured before the install.
Unfortunately, my daughter doesn't know if it is a new problem or not. D*mn kids!
Anyway, does anyone know what this file is?
Thanks!

Hi, Are you sure it isn't wmiprvs.exe. Note the r. It is part of the windows operating system. Check here for details. http://www.liutilities.com/products... Bluejay

Or perhaps wmiprvse.exe?

I'd recommend you first confirm that your daughter's account is a limited account and not an Administrator account just to reduce the risk of nasties being installed.

Thanks for the responses.
The file is definitely named wmipvs.exe.
It resides in c:\WINDOWS\system32. My other XP Home machine does not show that file in WINDOWS/system32.
My daughter's account is not an Administrator account. There are 4 accounts on the system, of which I am the only Admin.
My daughter's account (the one that presents the "Unknown Publisher" message) is the only account that has wmipvs listed in the msconfig Startup tab.
I have disabled it in msconfig and renamed the file to wmipvs.old until I can find out what it is.
Any further info you can provide would be appreciated.

Ms. SUMN,
I have checked the registry and it is present, but only in the MSCONFIG folder where I would have exepcted it to be.
Now that I have performed that search and found it there, do you have any suggestions as to how that will help me determine what it is?

Did you see this?

Yes, I saw that and plan to upload the file to Jotti's malware scan site when I get home tonight. http://virusscan.jotti.org/
I've scanned the system with AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot, CA Spyware and CA Anti-Virus. None of them flag that file as a threat.
What's interesting is that Yahoo is the only search engine (so far) that located wmipvs.exe in the geekstogo forum that you mentioned. All the other search engines I've tried ask me if I meant wmiprvse.exe.
The search continues.
