Comment:
for some time now when I start winxp, a network service called wmiprvse.exe is loaded on start and sits in memory eating all my computer resources. it disapepears from memory after some time, but I don't want to wait so long, so I normally crash it before. What is this thing, is it really needed and how do I deactivate it in the winxp services? I want to tell windows NOT to load it, but I don't know how or where.

This is 'Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Service'. It's set to startup automatically with windows but can dramatically slow down the boot process. Right-click 'My Computer', select 'Manage', expand 'Services and Applications', click 'Services'. Now in the right pane scroll down to 'Windows Management Instrumentation' (not 'driver extensions') and change from automatic to manual start (DONT DISABLE !!) Ur'll find it starts up of it's own accord after windows has loaded. Hope this helps !!
