Good evening everyone,

Is there any setting in Device Manager which will show me what is using my Com1 port(the only Communications Port listed under Ports besides the ECP Printer Port[LPT1])?

I think that when I was using Win95 there was such an option in Device Manager.

I ask this question out of curiousity not because I am having any problems.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Look on the back of the computer and see what is plugged into it. Comm1 is usually the external serial port port. Internal devices like internal modems usually create their own Comm port and call it Comm3 or 5.

Most computers have two of them but with the proliferation of USB, a lot of newer computer only have one.

Hi Stuart,

Your response makes me feel a lot better. I thought there was a setting inside Device Manager I was missing.

I also appreciate the added information that many of the newer computers only have one ComPort listed. This makes me feel much better since I am only showing one too.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

The RS232 ports aren't Plug 'n Play as far as I know so you'll have to try and detect what's on it or set it up manually. If there's is anything on them not recognised, you'd have to make the computer scan for new hardware. If there is anything detected like a Modem, you'll find it in the Device Manager and in it's properties it should say what port it's using. Or, just look at the back of the computer.
