I did a clean install of XP Pro over 98SE. I used the file transfer wizard beforehand to save my MP3 files into a specific folder. It was successful and I have no problems with XP but I noticed a new folder in that MP3 folder called USMT2.UNC. The USMT2.UNC folder contains 5 DAT files named IMG00001-IMG00005 and a status file. Each of these DAT files are about 2GB in size. Is it safe to delete these so I can have more disk space?

I'm not positive but I think those are backup files XP made so that you can go back to Windows 98. I'm certain they are not a part of Windows XP itself, so it is probably ok to delete them if you have no plans on going back to 98.

Check in Add/Remove programs and see if there is an option to remove the saved files for the previous OS.

Checking the Add/Remove programs was one of the first things I did and there is no option to remove these files or anything else related to Windows 98SE.

I guess the easiest answer, delete it , but dont remove it from the recycle bin for awhile until you are sure it has not affected anything. It couldnt be anything too important or why would it be in that directory! Maybe I'm wrong, but it wouldnt be the first time. :)

Your saying each one takes up almost 2GB's? So almost 10GB are in that folder? If so delete it. Just dont empty it from your recycle bin. Not sure what it is but i would get rid of it. It is taking up way to much space. U didnt happen to have 10GB's of Mp3's did ya? If not did u have around 10GB's or more on your hard disk when u upgraded? Just curious. Good luck
