I think we have a language problem here.

Add-ons are something that is added to an application. Something in addition to what the original came with. They can be useful depending an what application it is and what the Add-on does.

Perhaps the poster means add-ons that Internet Explorer uses. Adds functionality to Internet Explorer like control of tool bars. One example is webrep that gets installed as an add-on if you have avast antivirus. Webrep let you know if a website is to be trusted. This plugin can be either uninstalled within avast or disable within IE add-ons by way of the managing add-ons. Google for IE add-ons and read for yourself what others are available and what they will do.
