Hi,

normally, the transfer rate is given in kbit/s.
That means, you have 256 kbit/s, that is max. 32 kbyte/s.
Download rates are normally shown in kbyte/s, zjat means e.g. 30 kbyte/s is 240 kbit/s.
As you can see, there is a small differenz of 16 kbit/s. That's ok, because every connection needs a little bit of the speed for checking whether the downloaded packet are transfered correctly.

Because your ISP is spitting the bandwidth with too many people and no one is complaining about it.

You're getting screwed by your ISP. I would call them and complain about the low bandwidth. After all you are paying for a faster connection.

At the speeds that you post, you could be using a dial-up line.

You have to call them and complain. Get it straight or switch ISP services.

...and the 'capping' part is being brought in by the majority of broadband providers to put a limit on the amount of data which an individual can download - usually varies depending on the download speed & the amount paid - for example I pay £25/month for a 2Mb connection & am capped/limited to 30Gb over a month. In theory, if I exceed this my download speed will be dropped to 56k until the end of the month. It's really to stop these guys who just continually use P2P to download big files, usually at the expense of the average user.

This is interesting. I just want to say that Internet capping is never an issue with my Verizon DSL connection.

Paul's response was a good one.

Essentially you are getting what you paid for.

Note: Dial up at 56k which is really more like 48k bits delivers about 6k bytes/ps (if you are lucky) versus the 25-30 you are getting so it is not at all like dial up. It's about 5 times faster as you would expect at 256.

My Comcast cable has no cap either on this 6mb connection ($42/mo after discount).

Yesterday I downloaded Sun Java at 15.5 mb in 21 seconds. The download dialog box showed the average speed upon completion as 757 kilo bytes per second. The fastest I have ever seen. I thought I had a 4mb connection but they must have jacked it up to 6 recently.

In Australia if your adsl broadband connection download speed gets capped, the reason is you have gone over your download quota.

Mine would get dropped from 1500kbps to 64kbps if I download more that 20 gigs in a month...

Wombat,

Sounds like you are on the same Optus Cable plan that I'm on.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

G'day Sci-Guy, no I am with OzEmail / iiNet, on the light plan of 10 gig peak time, 10 gig off peak. Uploads are free as well.

I have the phone bundled with them as well which saves another $10.00.

They also have just started a VOIP service which is another phone line and number through the aadsl router.
