Concerning Disk Clean-up, what is 'compress old files', and what is a good time to wait until compressing old files (in settings)? And when I hit ok to clean the disk up, should it take ages to compress them?

This is a function in Windows XP that looks at yor files and the date they were last used. Any files that have not been used for some time it offeres to compress, thus saving space on you hard disk. The files are still there and available, but may take a little extra time to load as they are compressed.
How long you wait before compressing a file is really up to you. It depends on how much space you have on your hard disk, the type of file, what you do with the computer.
How long it takes is dependant on your hard disk and how fast it is as it is a disk intensive task. Shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes though.
