I ran CCleaner on my system at work and woa, did it screw with my system. I had to do a restore to get my computer back to normal. It slowed everything way up, making my system "choppy" like it just switched to Sanka or something. What is CCleaner and how can I run it without it giving me a "new and slower" computer? Here is the sum of the info I got from google: CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :) I want to use it (I think) but am not sure which options to select. It is a maintenance tool, but being quite popular and having a decent reputation does not imply it will work on 100% of the systems it is used on. If it botches yours or turns out not to play well with one thing or another that's currently on your PC. Forget it and move on to something else that does work flawlessly for your computer.

I used it without problems on M$-OS upto and including W2K. But when I ran it on an XP system... it crashed it more or less... I too had to go back to a restore point established immediately before I installed/ran ccleaner. I haven't risked it again on the XP system - pending further changes to the util. This having said many find it pefectly OK with XP; and certainly no problems were reported with earlier M$-OS?

It's fairly self explanatory - if it doesn't work for you (as odd as that may seem), yes, just move on. In XP, it has the option to clear files from the prefetch folder - you might consider disabling that function Problems are pretty rare - I've run it on dozens of systems, from Win95 to XP Pro and the improvements are quite tangible {ymmv} If I know the answer I'll tell you the answer, and if I don't, I'll just respond, cleverly --Donald Rumsfeld

CCleaner can be both a blessing if you know what it is doing and a curse if you don't. Read what californiakid wrote in Response Number 9 of this thread. In any event ... for your peace of mind... I encourage you to first take this quick tour before you install & run Ccleaner. i_XpUser
