A few weeks ago, I recieved the new AOL9 (UK) cd and installed it. I found it was very buggy and got to the point where it took 20 minutes to sign on (Using broadband). So I uninstalled and reinstalled but the problem persisted. After uninstalling and going back to AOL8 (UK), the connection time problem went but the whole computer slowed down. That problem was gone when I found out Norton Systemworks/Internet Security was corrupted. After reinstalling that, everything is back to normal. Or so I thought...

Now, every so often, when I logon the computer is very slow. I go into the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), check out Processes and see anything ranging from 1-10 entries for the application 'AOLacsd.exe' running on my user account. I realised that once I End all of those, the computer is back to normal speed and everything works. There is one I am unable to end which runs on System not my user account, but that is not a problem.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know the purpose of this application and what it does?

And also, since going back to AOL8, blocked port messages come up all the time on the Norton Alert Tracker. I get one every 5 seconds or so. They are all different port numbers including Port 4662 and http. Is there an explanation for this? Am I just being probed by some Trojan bot?

Thanks in advance!

I have never seen that. I did find this info at the bottom of this link, maybe something to do with AOL broadband?

In terms of connection methods it will do whatever the WAOL browser will do. They both use the same AOLacsd.exe service. The difference is that now you can use the AOL browser to initiate the connection or the AOL dialer.

Happy AOL user for 4yrs.

Thanks for your replies,

Knowing what the AOLacsd.exe process is, and that it's not only me whose having problems with it can make me feel better. I have had exactly the same problems (Slow-downs) described on the page describing what it is.

And Mary, although I have seen that post before, I dismissed it after reading the claims. I thought it would require some sort of hacking or special tools. I have just re-read it and understood that it doesn't, and that is is infact endorsed by AOL.

Thanks for your help, both of you!
