what is a *.par file?

i have these file, *.par *.p01 and so on.
can anybody tell me what they are and what program can opn them?

probably a RAR file rename to .rar and use winrar or power archiver to open

This is a file that can be opened with a program called mirror, I don't know where to get it from though, try searching for it. or look on the news groups
