what is a line in connector and what does it do and what is it for. I have a screen shot of the line in connector from the user guide but I dont know how to post a screen shot and the user guide does not tell me what it is for also.
I am using a LG LW60 Express laptop and am curious as to what it is for

We just had this question recently.
First, most microphone connectors are for lower audio levels than "line in" and most/many mic connectors havd DC voltage superimposed on them---sometimes called "phantom voltage" in order to operate some microphones which require it.
(Note too, that if you plug a dynamic or or some other mic into one of these ports, other than an electret mike, you may damage the mic or the computer mic port.)
The point is, on many computers, if you are trying to interface a stereo or othe audio source to your computer, do NOT hook it to the "mic" port. Some audio cards/ computers actually have means to disable the microphone voltage.
Now, the line in connector is built just FOR such things as interfacing some audio source, such as a tape deck output, phono deck, etc. The line is has NO "phantom voltage" on it, and is designed to accept higher audio levels than are such things as the mic input.
