I've been having some problems with my hard drive lately (don't know the brand) so I ran Windows XP hard drive error checking.
Things seemed to be better for a little bit, but then I started getting program hangups and disk read errors again. I know the hard drive is to blame because under the system events, where all the errors are recorded, all of them are related to disk read errors
So my question is this: What is a good program to check and repair a hard drive? Preferrably freeware

What company makes the HD? Maxtor has a real nice diagnostic program that I found works on almost any drive. It's called PowerMax, and you can download it here: http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm
I like the one WD makes. You can get a copy of it from Gateway's Web Site it is free and works with all makes of hard drives. It will only attempt to repair WD HDD's though.
