... as soon as you turn on the laptop hold-in the <F10> <key>

... do you see a recovery option? ....... might be <F11> on newer model.

what happens after someone used disk sanitizer is that there is NOTHING on the hard disk - not even recovery partition or anything. Disk sanitzers are designed to nukes hard drives before they are disposed.

i did the f10 thing..i entered the set up...

i did the hdd check and memory check earlier,..it was all ok..i was wondering if ALL data including the driver of the motherboard and everything else got erased because of that disk sanitizer incident...

... "XpUser" guess you can aim the "sanitizer" at a partition(?)

... perhaps leave one intact(?)

"...i did the f10 thing..i entered the set up..."

... also guessing "meanleng" is talking "past tense"(?)

... nothing @ F10 <key> prompt now?

actually, my laptop was working perfectly yesterday..i decided to have it reformatted..reformatting was ok at first..then there was an error...file missing or corrupted,,the cd came with the laptop when i bought it..so i bought another installer,xp pro...it was doing ok at first,,till it hanged..the finalising part said only 9 mins. i check the status bar every minute...about an hour or half an hour, there was no progress..bad luck hit me cause electricity went out during the formatting process..when electricity was back, i turned on my laptop, then it said "set up is restarted"..i thought it was ok, but there was already an error...

"...i use an external dvd writer for the cd..."

... try the F10 <key> without the use of any cd's

... I am not sure which cd you are referring to!

... recovery should work without other media unless its zapped!

... I was hoping to evoke the HP Recovery Manager if it exists

... maybe not, if it does it should reinstall wonderfull vista to factory condition.

... whilst in windows you should of had an option to create bootable recovery cd's through the program's listing.

... it should state something along the bottom of your screen @ bootup which keys to press etc

... "X86" #5 points to a download worth trying, worst case scenario if it does'nt show any other partitions (recovery)

... FDisk (remove) partition(s)

... then create one primary partition, then format it.

... you should then be able to install xp via cd.
