possible sign of a faulty or failing hard drive.

Is yours a name-brand system or a custombuilt?
Do you have a full install CD for the operating system?
What brand hard drive? Download & run a drive diagnostic testing program. These are run from either a bootable floppy or CD.

or if you have a windows XP installation CD , Boot from the CD and DO a repair install..

It can be fixed from recovery console as well:
1) Boot the system with XP Cd
2) When setup asks for installation options, Press R
3) Select the windows drive
4) put admin password
5) You will see a command prompt. Type below
copy E:\i386\ntldr C:\
copy E:\i386\ntdetect* C:\

It should work..
