Just loaded WGA Microsoft update today. System is now corrupt and won't load XP, comes up with "unmountable boot volume". Anything I can do other than take in for system analysis at computer shop?

I doubt it's all because of that intrusive WGA (well M$ is tightening its hold on everybody PCs - they own the software we have a license only to use it)

All I heard is that the current WGA will pester you with nothing more than annoying popups. Is your XP counterfeit?

XP is not conterfeit to my knowledge. Bought CPU new from Office Depot approx. 4 yr. ago. Also had same problem after installing SP2. Same error message and had to pay for a fix at local computer shop. Don't have XP CD to use to trouble shoot.

A real XP CD would probably be cheaper than a trip to the shop and would allow you to reinstall now and in the future. Just a thought.

Do me a favor. Click on ΓΏ+Pause/Break

On the General Panel, what does the "System" say? Does it say

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

or does it say something else?

The reason I asked you to do that is that I think the local computer shop may have used corporate edition to reinstal Windows. If this is so, the WGA detected it. Take it back and demand that they do it over again the legal way or else you know what's your rights.

Can't get the command you suggest to work. I'm sitting at a black screen displaying different options that trys to reboot XP every 30 seconds.
