I am as likely to use WinXP as I was to use WinME: Not happening. Somewhere, there has to be a limit on how much trash you are willing to put up with -- ME\XP is that line for me.

I am not going to upgrade on the day of release or anything, but I do want to test drive it. Win2000 was the best thing to happen to my computer. (as far as MS operating systems go) XP is supposed to be the end-all home and business version of windows that 2000 was slated to be. But there will have to be some major advantages for me to get rid of my win2k any time soon.

Is XP Beta available to the public yet ? If so, what are the system requirements for it ?

I don't think the beta (build 2296) is public. Best chances to get a version are with Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) if you have a 'professional' contract.
Hardware requirements are the same as with Win2000, some people are happy with 128 MB, some need more.

I've played around with a Beta of WinXP.
Basically, there is a new shell "look" which come with a few extra enhancements. Boot time is about 8 times longer than with 98. Yes, it runs on NT kernal, but Win2k is MUCH more stable, AND has a shorter boot up time. As for drivers, all the ME and NT drivers I used worked fine. If you ask me, just get Win2k... its the best of all the MS operators.

I use windows3.1 windows95 windows98se windowsME and windows2000. By far the most stable is 2000 and 3.1....this is on my first PC and still runs like it did when i got it. All of the Operating Systems have there place. Some of us are gamers some for business some for web browsing email what ever. Dont spend money you dont have too. Does windows 95 work for you? Then keep it! Besides by the time windows 9X are truly obsolete i think you would have purchased a new PC by then. No matter how much you love that 1.5 hard drive ya gotta bury it sooner or later! lol "floppy? whats a floppy?" a question our grandchildren will ask!!!!

Amen to all.
After the last Windows upgrade, I remember Microsoft pulling out a full-page ad in the Business section of the NY Times and boasting "20 times" more stable than its previous version. I wonder what they will say this time.
Yes, how much more rubbish do we have to put up with before saying enough? I think MS should give XP free to those who have put up with 20 times less reliable Windows. That will still leave Bill the richest man on earth.

Lots of talk in the media about the digital divide, as if people who don't have a computer, modem, and ISP account will have no place in the "new economy." The bitter truth is that, using the Server edition of Whistler in combination with the Itanium CPU, the corporate IT elite will be making every single piece of computer hardware on the planet completely obsolete, and the entire concept of "making a living" along with it. 64 bit architecture means that no matter how fast, how many cycles per second, your CPU is running, every cycle of the Itanium chip will process twice as much.

"Q: Will Microsoft support Itanium with Whistler?
A: Whistler is being optimized to run on both x86 and Itanium processor architectures. Whistler will also be available in a 64-bit version designed to take advantage of the performance advancements of Itanium, such as large addressable memory support and machine check architecture (MCA)."

The brand new computer that ships to your house TODAY will be as state of the art as a PS/2 286 one year from now.

Take a look for yourself:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/future/whistler.asp

If you're not already part of the IT elite, get into school now or the rest of your life will pass you by in a head-spinning a blur.

I'm running into an XP nightmare when sharing network resources. The XP machine has a CD burner that I would like to share with the two Win98se machines on my network. Did my networking the "old fashion" way, i.e., assigning TCP/IP addresses to the Win98 while the XP is the gateway. Everyone is able to "see" everyone, data is shared beautifully, however, cannot share out the cd burner on the XP. Have done a drive map, have gone into the XP and "shared" out the burner (i can see the "hand" underneath the burner) but no sharing - Don't understand - HELP...
thanks for you help and insight
