Logging in from welcome screen and getting to my desktop all normal the first time (after boot). Then I log off, back to welcome screen and try to enter password to log back on (my side or wifes), the password box appears but no cursor to enter password?
This only happens when you log of an account,If I use switch user no problem. I have to reboot to get cursor to appear in password box.
Thanks, Mike

Hello Mike,
Problem looks better about your windows program than the computer itself.
I'd suggest:
1) Try to see if you can check the drive C for errors, right click on drive C, then "tools" and check for errors drive, bookmark "repair automatically"
2) Try to defragment your drive C using the same procedure.
3) If problem persists, try to make a "restoration" using the program "MSconfig". ATTENTION this program is the heart of windows configuration !!! don't touch anything else than what I suggest......
Go to "start", then "run", or "execute" MSconfig, when you arrive to the welcome page click on "restore" the computer, choose a date two days before your actual date. Confirm to "restore" then wait for the final procedure.
Windows will reopen normally after confirmation of restoration....
USE MSCONFIG only if the two precedents procedures didn't match.....

First of all thanks for replying Imp, I appreciate it. You were right it was a windows program problem < operator error.
I realized that windows automatic update had installed some security updates. What I did not realize was that my computer had to be shut off for one of them to take effect (not restarted but shut down). More specifically I had to log off then select shut down on the welcome screen, the shut down icon had the update sheild icon overlapping the top right corner. After clicking shut down it said downloading and installing 1 update, then the it shut down. I have never seen this before (have you seen this?). Restarted and everything is fine now.
Thanks again.
Mike

any other suggestions? I have the same problem on two machines running xp pro. One I just reformatted when the trouble started. I can't use system restore since I deleted the system restore points. My best guess is it is a glitch with an update. Why the problem with just a few I don't know. Other people are having the same issue and there seems to be no solution.

Logging off an account to another account -there is no cursor for the password login box on the welcome screen. Rebooting or hitting Ctrl alt delete to get the classic login box is the only way to log on.
