SORRY FOR POSTING THIS AGAIN BUT SOME HOW MY POST DECIDED TO DISAPPEAR FROM THE FORUM ???
Original message
I have built 2 machines on the weekend
1st is a DFI Motherboard with Athlon XP1700, 256mb ram, 120 gig HDD, PCI LAN card. etc2nd Leadtek Nforce motherboard with Athlon XP2400 512mb ram 120,gig HDD and an ONBOARD LAN adapter. Etc
Both are networked with a 5 port switch and both sharing the internet off a DSL Router.
I installed XP Pro on both machines one after the other with the same CD and before I installed any software
whats so ever I decided to run windows update, On the 1st machine windows update worked fine as normal and
downloaded and installed all the patches,
But the 2nd machine goes from 0 to 100 really quick and says "There are no updates available for your computer.
Please check back later" I even tryed turning off the XP built-in firewall & still no go.
Please note: Both machines have access to the internet through the same router and are browsing the web fine on
both.
I just can't understand why 1st machine would let me use windows update and 2nd machine won't since they are
setup the same with the same disk and all.
any ideas.
Cheers for any suggestions.

I have tryed changing the IP address of the non-working machine,
and yes I did use the same CD-Key for both machines.
Also I tryed to connect the non-working machine directly to the net bypassing the switch and still no go
Any more suggestions welcome.
Thanks.

There may be a few explanations because of this.
A firewall may be interfering with it.
or a corrupt windows update settings file. [u can delete the settings file i know of this, but i dont actually know how ;P ]
more details could help diagnose this problem
JJJ

Nope I don't think a firewall has anything to do with it, as quoted I havn't installed any software, its a brand new installation and also I disabled the windows XP Firewall, I have no firewall on my router either.
I will do a google search and see if I can find corrupt windows update settings file.
This is a really wierd problem aye.

Ok this is wierd I changed the workgroup of one of the machines and then it all started working ... UMMMM What is microsoft thinking LOL

Yes I actually do have 2 copys but one is unopened.
I didn't think it would matter if I used the same cd-key.
Maybe it has something to do with it?

No it doesn't matter that you are using the same key on both machines. Check with microsoft. That is allowed since you own both machines and you own the CD's
