Guys/Gals,
Just upgraded to this K7S5A Athlon mobo, Athlon 1600XP, 512 meg of PC133 ram (generic) SB Live, Adaptec 2940UW SCSI Adapter, Plextor 12/10/32x CDR, Lite-on 52x cd-rom, and a D-link network card with a TNT2 Ultra video card, Standard Full tower ATX case with 3 case fans and 300 watt power supply all running under WinXP and Win2K (dual boot) I got a Geforce 3 for x-mas and here comes the problems.. Whenever I try to run Unreal Tournament it plays for about 1-2 minutes then freezes for about 15 seconds and I get a blue screen saying there was a problem with niv_disp which i my video card driver, and starts a memory dump then reboots. I installed every driver I can find, reinstalled DX8.1, applied all the SIS patches and AMD patches and STILL no luck! Diablo 2 stutters sometimes, and most everything else will play but Unreal will not. Does anybody know what the hell the problem is? I have 0 problems until this new video card and I am getting completely frustrated. I just ordered a new case thinking heat is the problem as the video card does get pretty hot but not scorching hot. CPU temp is like 37C. I have tried running Unreal in both OS's with the same results each time so it's not the OS that is the problem.
Thanks.

lol.. first of all dont worry about heating. you got 3 fans. i only have one crappy one i run everything fine. your problem may be that the nvidia drivers for ur tnt2 may still be in ur files. so when u play unreal tournament it access them and the mess up ur geforce. also do u have the new detonator driver from nvidia???
lol 3 fans.....

Hi Jonathan.
A few things you can try.
1. If you are using 32 bit color quality try changing it to 16 bit.The GeForce 3 card has this problem with the "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" game so maybe it affects other games as well.
Right click on desktopProperties
Settings
Color Quality - 16 bit
Apply
OK
2. If you are using the Sound Blaster Taskbar or Launcher, turn it off.I have a Sound Blaster Audigy card and I saw the words "Creative Taskbar" in the blue screen as it flashed by before rebooting while trying to play a game.
StartRun
type - msconfig
OK
Startup
Look for anything that might be the Creative Taskbar or Launcher.
In my case, it is CTLTask and CTLTray.
Uncheck them
Apply
OK
reboot computer
3. Did you install your video card driver update automatically or manually?Try updating the driver manually.
Make a folder on your hard drive called - Nvidia Drivers - and put the update driver file in it.If the file is zipped, unzip it in this folder.
Before updating any drivers, make a "System Restore Point" on your computer so you can restore it to its previous state if the new drivers don't work.
StartControl Panel
Performance and Maintenance
upper left of screen - System Restore
To update video card drivers manually -Nvidia has several different drivers available and some people have success with the latest while others don't so try different versions if one doesn't work for you.
Here is a website that has Nvidia drivers -
http://www.3dnews.ru/download/drivers/nvidia/
The W2K drivers are also usable with XP.
StartControl Panel
Performance and Maintenance
System
Hardware
Device Manager
click on arrow next to Display Adapters
Right click on name of video card
Update Driver
Choose - Install from a list
Next
Don't Search
Next
Click on name of your video card
Have Disk
Browse - Locate the file in your - Nvidia Drivers folder - called - nv4_disp.inf
Next
Finish
reboot computer
Take care,Callisto

Hi again.
Another thought.
If the above options don't work, you can try changing your AGP speed in your BIOS from 4X to 2X and turn off Fast Writes.
Fast Writes offer little in the way of performance but causes stability problems.
Go into the BIOS on bootup by holding one of the keys or combination of keys below -
{Delete} (modern Award and AMI BIOSes)
{F2} (modern Phoenix BIOSes)
{Ctrl}+{Alt}+{Esc}
{Ctrl}+{Esc}
{Alt}+{Esc}
{Ctrl}+{Alt}+{S}
{Insert}
{F1}
Consult your system manufacturer for the key combination.
Do you have a VIA chipset?I read somewhere that Nvidia cards and VIA have an issue and a patch is being worked on for it.
So if none of the above works, you may have to wait for the patch to become available.
Take care,Callisto
