Hello all,
Well heres my problem. I right click on my computer then properties & where it says automatic updates ie notify me before dowloading & installing updates etc etc, these are all greyed out & above it says windows update service is unavailable. I know i can still go to the windows update site & get the updates, but i would like to get them automatically. Can anyone explain to me why i cant do this? Thank you

Marty,

One thing you didn't tell us was,

Is the service set to start automatically in Services.msc?

Also, check here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp

and follow their suggestions to turning on and configuring the Auto Update.

I don't hap XP Pro, so am not sure how it works, but in HELP (XP Home) it sez:

"In Windows XP Professional, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure."

You might try your XP Pro HELP.

Bob,

I'm not sure what your response has to do with Marty's problem, however, do you have Spybot Search & Destroy?

If so, do you have the Immunize feature turned on?

This will prevent opening Internet Options from IE. You can still open it from the Control Panel, however.
