Hi,
At my office, we just bought a new Dell computer. It didn't come with a modem, so we took the modem out an old computer we had lying around. We started up windows, it automatically installed the driver.
We went to connect to the internet, and it said NO DIAL TONE. I checked the connections, and they were all fine. Tried it again and nothing. I brought it over to a phone jack that we know works, and it got on the internet with no problem.
So, we bought a splitter, plugged it into the jack we know works, and ran a line from the splitter to the new Dell. It said it Couldn't contact the remote computer, and when tried again, it said NO DIAL TONE. The other computer plugged into the jack works fine.
We really need this thing on the internet, and I am totally at a loss for what it could be - it is plugged into a working jack, I have a phone line that I know works, and the connections are obviously correct, since it was able to connect to the internet.
Any ideas???????

Just a shot in the dark, but it sounds like a bad splitter. Switch the lines between the 2 machines and see if the working computer can connect on that line.

Hi,
I tried buying a new splitter, and the problem persists. I am at a loss on what to do now.

OK, please excuse my dumb questions: is the splitter just a regular old "Y" connector? You're not trying to get a dial tone while the first computer is already using the line, are you?

good question, and I honestly can't answer you. I am pretty sure that we have not been using both lines at once, but I'll do another test to make sure. It is possible that I didn't cut the connection with the first computer when I tried to get on with the second one. I'm gonna feel really silly if that solves the problem!!!
We also tried a different splitter, and it didn't work :(
