Hi all. k. I have been a pc tech for a crapload of years now, and have a problem I CANNOT figure out. I occasionally hear a sound coming from my laptop, and really any machine I've built for the past several years now that honestly sounds like feet shuffling on, let's say, a little sand on a wood floor. It last as long as it takes for you to sound out while reading here: "ffft. ffft." sometimes one of them, sometimes two, but never more than two sequenced. It is so doggone random it is enough to drive ya nuts. it is also VERY rare, but when it sounds, you hear it right away. not loud, and seems to not be affected by speaker volume.

Any smidgen of a clue here would be VERY appreciated. Thanks plenty in advance! :)

I like that, it does get down to that a lot when answering questions on the forum.

I have heard that from the CPU or fans. Often caused by dust.

Thanks John, but I have no doubt it has nothing to do with heat or dust. this thing is nearly new, clean as ever, and runs cool as a cucumber. It is also incredibly quiet. except once in blue moon you hear that ffft sound. real rare, but yesterday I heard it several times, before that - never on this machine. but on other installs of mine, I've heard it over the years. I think it might be something I do. some program or config I put in place. A small hidden facet of a proggy someplace obscure that I never checked or unchecked to do or not do something. I will try to test it out to see if it does it when I have a boatload of proggy's open and doing something. It may, by some slim chance be tied to ask'n a bit much of the resources at a given time when the sound sounds.

Not all of my installs are mirror images of each other though. I've used McAfee Enterprise 8.x.x, AVG, Avira, MBAM, RegCure, Spywareblaster, all MS Office suites, Nero 6.x, Foxit Reader, and so on. Point is, no matter how I config a box, I eventually always hear that sound at some point in time. it is NOT recreatable though. least not on demand anyway. So, yeah, I can live with it, but I always wonder if there is something crawling around in my data that is not welcomed. Oh, and I do NOT run all those programs listed on the same box or at the same time of course, I was just listing ones I've used over the years. I am well aware of how "easy" it is to fix a random problem. ha! right. but welome any ideas anyone has or if anyone else has ever heard this funky little sound from their machine.

Oddly enough, now that I think about it, I am not sure if I've heard it from any maker except Dell boxes I've built. I've done Tosh's, HP, Gateway's, Asus, and a few brands hardly anyone's ever heard of.

Thanks again,

John, please explain further your comment of "I have heard that from the CPU or fans." You may be onto something there for me. I'll check out the links you included as well.

"I have heard that from the CPU or fans."

Usually when they are under stress Chuck, extreme heat is one cause.
