PLEASE READ ALL OF MESSAGE:
I decided to take the 80GB hard drive from a seldom used machine and replace it with a smaller 40GB drive as I had use for the 80GB drive elsewhere. I removed the 80GB drive and installed Windows XP Pro with the NTFS on the 40. I was then going to install the 80GB drive as a slave and transfer all my music from the 80 to the 40. When I rebooted the machine it started from the old 80GB instead of the 40. Even though the jumpers were set as slave on the 80 and master on the 40 it still insists on booting the 80GB drive.
The old 80GB drive was/is a DUAL BOOT with Win98 and WinXP and was formatted in the FAT32 file system. I didn't consider this a problem since WinXP (formatted in the NTFS) can read the FAT32 format.
My BIOS screen states:
IDE Prime Master - Maxtor 6L040J2 (the 40)
IDE Prime Slave - Samsung SP8004H (the 80)
IDE Secondary Master - HL-DT-ST RW/DVD (DVD)
IDE Secondary Slave - NoneStill it boots from the 80GB. When the 80 is removed the machine fires up the 40 and boots normally.
What am I missing here? Why can't I boot from the 40GB drive? Any suggestions? I know I posted this earlier today but I need this to work ASAP. Sorry for the double post...

Sorry Grasshopper... it isn't a dual boot problem since I will be booting XP only on the 40GB drive... I need to get the files off the dual boot hard drive.

you need to give your drive a cleaning with an aluminum can of decompressed air. You can get one cheap from your local geek emporium; usually they're only a few bucks.
Half Life 2 kicks ass

Enter bios setup and check boot order. You likely have IDE-1 vice IDE-0 selected. When there is no IDE-1 device it will boot to IDE-0.

Whoa! I should use that one at work. lol.
It sounds like you have mbr's on both drives
if the 80 was the master in the begining.
I suggest if you want to move files the burn them on dvd or cd.
Reformat and turn the drive into a slave. (with no os unless you want a dual boot system)
then copy your files into any folder that you want via cd or dvd

Thanks guys... I am slowly starting to remember why I left the PC world all those years ago! The Head Aches! I will try ghosting the 80 onto the 40. Thanks for your reply.

The reason it is booting from the 80 gig instead of the 40 is that you pulled the 40 from an old machine and the boot record is not for the machine it is on, so is rejected from the boot sequence. The computer achnowledges that it is dual boot and automatically goes to the first available good boot, which is the 80 gig hdd.
