I wanted to download a picture to "My Pictures", but I wasn't too careful selecting the destination.

The picture is somewhere on my hard drive, but I can't find it.

When I log off or shut down, the picture flashes briefly on the screen. It's a small jpeg, but it's stretched to fit the screen.

It's not in the wallpaper folder or any folder where you might ordinarily store a picture, and I can't find it using search.

Any idea where I might have downloaded it to?

Thanks

There are a couple ways to find it. If you know the name that is good, but if not oh well. Just go to your Windows Search and search for *.jpg on your hard drive. It will bring up every jpeg file on your drive. Then just click on each one once and it will show you a thumbnail pic of it. It shows the location of everything it finds, so once you find the pic, you'll have the location. Also, just check My Documents and My Pictures. Those are usually the default places Windows downloads to.

Post back results either way.

try running a search for .jpg files created or modified on the day that you downloaded it. If you don't remember the day, you could try setting the search for any temporary folders or temporary internet folders on the c drive. HTH

Hi,
You could go back to the page you downloaded it from and start to download it again. When the box asks where you want to save it, it might show you where it went. You could look at the name of the file as it is being saved.
Then try Search again.
Just a thought,
XDon

Thanks for all the replies.

I've searched by name, file type, date and any other way you can think of.

The only place it seems to be is "underneath" the desktop.

I was hoping someone would know the location of that screen.

Underneath the desktop? Hmmm...did you select Set As Backround? Did you try right-clicking on the desktop, and going into display properties. In there click the Web tab and uncheck the Show Web Content on Desktop. Also check your wallpaper and see if that is it. If it is a .jpg file, I'm not sure why searching for all of your .jpg files would not bring it up. That is very odd.

Some of you probably won't believe ths, but I actually tried every suggestion before I posted, so let me try another question.

In Windows98 SE, if you click on "Cancel" on the user log on screen, you actually access a "Default User" desktop. You can right click this desktop, click on properties, and customize it the same way you can any user account.

As a matter of fact, whenever you log on or off, or shutdown 98 SE, the background of this "Default User" flashes briefly on the screen.

Is there any way to access a "Default User" desktop in XP Pro?

Thanks again.

I still haven't found the file, but I did find a way to keep it from being displayed.

On my computer, when I click Log Off or Turn Off Computer, the desktop closes, and what's displayed briefly is the file that was used previously as the background.

I set the background to none, and selected what is the predominate color in the file I wanted to use as the background.

Now when I Log Off, when the desktop closes you really have to watch very carefully to see the blank background flash briefly.

Since I can't find the file of the picture, I guess it's impossible to set it as the background in the future, so I'll most likely never see it again.
