When I start my computer I always get this message,----"A webserver is already running on port 80. For best results stop this and restart application"---- There is only one other user of this computer and myself. Win XP Home. Can anyone tell me what this refers to??

Since IIS is not included with Windows XP home edition, you either have a third party application that was installed to turn your computer in to a server (such as apache, Kaaza, or BearShare), or you have fallen victim to spyware installed on your machine. To scan for spyware, you can go to www.lavasoft.de and download Ad-Aware 6.0 Free Edition. Make sure that you download the latest signature files before doing a scan. Once the scan is complete, delete all detected spyware. By the way, if you use P2P programs, make sure to read the EULA. Most of these programs do contain spyware. Kaaza, eDonkey2000, BearShare all contain spyware. But there are P2P apps that do not contain spyware such as Kaaza Lite 2.0.2, and eMule. If Cydoor is detected, remove it, and the application that it is associated with.

I also reccomend that you install a firewall. This is a neccisity if you are on a broadband connection, and highly reccomended if you are on a dialup connection. The one provided with Windows XP is not a very good firewall, as it only blocks incoming connections, but not outgoing connections. Many free firewalls are free such as Tiny Personal Firewall, Kero Personal fireall, and ZoneAlarm.

If you do not have any AV sofware installed, this is a must do. Not only will you protect your machine from malicious code and trojans, you will also help protect any user that you share files with.
