this isn't xp related, but anybody who has it can probably answer my question.

my isp provides me with 10mb webspace. is this the same as web hosting? the space is more than enough, I just need to know the difference. I want to transfer my www.myname.com site to that space. can anybody tell me the difference or if I can do this?

Whos your isp? I use earthlink and they give me some freebie space. Its real webspace with no banner ads or MSN's communities scam.

If you have real space you can register your domain with someone who offers URL forwarding. At dotster.com you register a domain and they will forward it wherever you want for free but they put an ad on it. For $5.00 a year they remove the ads. What this does is link your www.myname.com domain to the free "http://home.earthlink.net/~whatever your username is" space. Someone would see the www.mydomain.com in the address bar instead of the nonsense URL you isp gives you.

So yes you can do it for about $20.00 per year. $14.95 for the www.myname.com domain and $5.00 for the bannerless forwarding to your free space.

Alot of options are available from many different domain companies. Some of them sell different packages. You can have a domain and an email address with URL forwarding for about $30.00. You can host 1,2 or 3 page sites with an email address with a domain. If you can think of a combination it probably exists somewhere.

ShutMeUpOrDown said it pretty well. Bypass your ISP and go with a true web hosting company though. I have most of my sites hosted for about $20/year with unlimited space and traffic. No banners, pop ups, etc either.

You can get more options if you go with a real web hossting company also. Like all sorts of cgi scripts (guest book, counters, custom error pages, etc), web stats for tracking, and lots more. Your ISP wont offer these. I also get as many email addresses as I can dream of with auto responders, etc.
True, all of these options are free if you surf the web and sign up with 25 different sites out there but a good web hosting company can give them all to you free without all the hassle of searching and filling out stupid forms. Like I said....$20/year!

Post back if you want the URL of a couple of quality hosting companies.

G, i would definately like the URl's :).
Currently im paying near $100.00 a year for my domain($15pr year) and hosting($75.00pr year). No .cgi either. I thought i had found the best deal after seeing companies who want $20.00-$30.00 a month for hosting.
