Name: salgolf
For no apparent reason, my volume has become very weak, almost inaudible. This is true with email, anything on Internet, CDs, DVDs, wave files, mp3, etc. You name it. Yes, all volumes are turned up to maximum, and no, no mutes are checked. No errors in Device Manager. There is a signal, but it's very weak. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

salgolf, driver? Installed anything new lately which might've altered your settings or started using it's own 'improved' driver?
HTH.
Ed in Texas.

have you tried using headphones to see if they are also real low?
It might be your speaker system....who knows...it's worth a shot.
You may also try new up-dated drivers for your soundcard.
Everest home is handy for that because it usually gives you a link to where the drivers are. Good LuckHopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Ed in Texas - (Greetings from Amarillo. On my way back east.) The only thing I've added -- after which this began to happen -- was an iTunes version update. I have to look into that a little further. After I updated, I downloaded some music to my iPod and it played normally. It was right after that the problem started. That was Friday.
Should add that my 'speaker system' is simply the built-in speakers that come with the computer.
XPUser4Real - Same problem with headphones. I'm taking a look at Everest. Can't figure out yet if it tells me I have a problem. So far, the sound checks I have done don't report anything unusual, but maybe I'm not using it properly. Sound drivers, unlike printer or display drivers, have always baffled me. Not sure even which drivers I'm using/need, and how I tell which ones may have problems. If you can enlighted me a little on that front, I'd appreciate it. Device Manager, e.g., show me six sound, video and game controllers.
Thanks to both for your help.

When you open Everest:
Click on the + By Computer and then click on Summary.
Beside the video adaptor, audio adaptor you will see a link. Click on it, then you will see driver download.
Hope that helpsHopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Thanks to all for your help. Still no sound. I'm on a cross-country drive so don't get to my computer as often as I'd like. Installed new updated driver. No help. Toshiba tried a few things. No help. They suggest starting over with a complete recovery, but I don't think I want to do that before trying a lot more. Have done several system restores. No help. Well, we'll see. Thanks again.

If you have access to and XP Home disc you could try a repair install:

Thanks. I will try that when I get home. Forgot you could do a repair/install without doing a complete recovery.
Thanks again.
