I've been having issues recently with my Western Digital USB External Hard Drive. Actually, about two months ago, on this same machine, I was using Windows XP Home. The computer, after several months of recognizing the hard drive with no problem at all, suddenly stopped recognizing it. It would list the hard drive as an unknown device and would not read any data from it. I tried to reinstall the drivers but was unable to do so. The hard drive worked fine on my roommate's Win2k machine and a friend's XP Pro machine. Since I was looking for an excuse to upgrade to Pro, I simply bought Pro and reformatted the boot drive and installed Pro.
Now Pro seems to be having the same problem. I have found a temporary workaround for the problem that involves me disconnecting the hard drive, powering it down, and powering it back up. However, the fix is only temporary and eventually it refuses to read the hard drive again.
I'm on a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop with a offical Toshiba port replicator. The hard drive is connected through an external USB hub, although hooking it up directly to the port replicator achieves no better results. I've tried Western Digital's support, and they have no solution for me. If anyone has any ideas about this matter, I'd really appreciate hearing them. Thanks.
